TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –The West Virginia University women’s cross country team finished 15th at the 2004 NCAA Championships held today at LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
Mountaineer coach Jeff Huntoon says the race was held this morning in less than ideal conditions. “It is a beautiful course but it was a muddy horse track today,” he said. “It affected all of the teams and runners.”
Senior Megan Metcalfe placed 16th with a time of 20:58 to earn All-America honors. It was the second time she’s earned All-America honors, having done so in 2002. Charity Wachera is the school’s only other cross country All-American, capturing the citation in 1997.
Senior Tara Struyk was the second Mountaineer finisher, crossing the tape in a time of 21:42 to place 48th overall.
Jennifer Davis completed the course in a time of 21:49 to finish 60th, followed by Susan Davis (99th) and Devon Plesuk (165). Rachel Carden (23:14) and Jennifer Kemp (23:15) also competed for WVU, which finished with 388 team points.
“I thought our team gave great effort today,” he said. “I’m very proud of what they have accomplished this year.”
Colorado won the race with 63 points, followed by Duke (144), Providence (164) and Notre Dame (170).
Villanova finished seventh to give the Big East four schools finishing in the Top 15.
Kim Smith of Providence won the race with a time of 20:09.
West Virginia’s 15th place finish was its best in school history. It completes an outstanding campaign for West Virginia, which captured its first-ever Mid-Atlantic Regional title last weekend at Penn State.
