MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team received goals from three different players including three goals from Jarrod Evans alone to defeat Delaware 5-0 on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Evans opened up scoring for the Mountaineers (11-6-1) just 15 seconds into the match when fellow freshman Reed Cooper found him streaking towards the net and hit him with a pass for his second goal of the season.
The score would remain 1-0 at the half with the Blue Hens (4-13-1) leading in shots 10-8.
In the 53rd minute senior Aaron Pitchkolan scored his third goal of the season when he headed a shot in the net off a pass from Dan Stratford on a corner kick.
Freshman Geoff Cameron would come calling next for WVU. Cameron got open about 10 yards out from the goal on the right side and drilled a shot past Delaware goalkeeper Kyle Haynes.
Less than a minute later Evans came calling again when Mike Anoia fed a perfect ball into the Potomac, Md., native and he hit a low shot that found the back of the net.
Evans capped off his evening when he collected a ball that rebounded back out to the middle of the penalty box. Evans poked it in for the hat trick.
The hat trick marked the second time this season that a Mountaineer freshman has done so. Dan Stratford completed the first three-goal game for WVU against Longwood on Oct. 3.
The game was also a special for sophomore goalkeeper Nick Noble who broke Mark Bachteler's single season goals against average that had stood since 1989. Noble's 71 minutes of shutout goalkeeping lowered his GAA to .80, .09 better than Bachteler's .89 GAA.
With Tuesday's result Noble also holds the career low for goals against in school history with a .97 mark. He surpassed Jon Capon's average of 1.22 GAA.
With UConn's 2-1 win over Providence on Tuesday the Mountaineers found out that they will play the first round of the BIG EAST tournament in Jamaica, N.Y. against No. 9 St. John's on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
