Women's Basketball: WVU wins in Exhibition

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women's basketball team defeated the Netherlands National Team, 70-61, in exhibition action Sunday at the WVU Coliseum.
Three Mountaineers scored in double figures led by sophomore guard Meg Bulger's game-high 23 points on 10-18 shooting from the field, including 3-6 from three-point range.
Junior center Yelena Leuchanka and senior guard Sherell Sowho posted 16 and 10 points, respectively, for the Mountaineers who shot 49 percent (27-55) from the field.
West Virginia never trailed in the game after jumping to a 7-0 lead. The Mountaineers took their first 10-point lead of the contest with 6:44 remaining in the first half on one of Bulger's three three-pointers in the game. WVU, leading 44-31 at the half, led by as many as 21 points in the second half when it took a 57-36 lead with 13 minutes remaining.
Freshman guard Chakhia Cole tallied a game-high nine rebounds, while senior point guard Yolanda Paige dished out a game-high 12 assists to go with her eight points. Bulger led the Mountaineers with four steals, while she and Leuchanka snared seven rebounds apiece.
The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Netherlands, 36-26, as no Dutch player had more than five rebounds. The Netherlands' top scorers were forward Romy Calderon with 21 points on 8-18 shooting from the field and 5-10 from three-point range, while Marloes Roetgerink and Leonie Kooy totaled 10 points apiece.
