AUSTIN, Texas - The West Virginia University women's soccer team looks for its second straight Sweet 16 appearance when it takes on subregional-host Texas on Sunday, Nov. 14, at noon (CST).
The Mountaineers (15-5-0) defeated SMU, 2-1, on Friday evening to earn their third trip to the NCAA tournament second round in as many years. Twelfth-seeded Texas (14-6-2) shutout North Texas, 3-0, in Friday's second match to advance to its first-ever second round match.
Sunday's meeting will be West Virginia's first-ever against a member of the Big 12 conference.
The Mountaineers, who are undefeated on the road in 2004, will have to snap the Longhorns' 11-match, home win streak in order to claim their second appearance in the coveted round of 16.
On the season, Texas is led by seniors Kelly Wilson and Kelly McDonald. Wilson is the Longhorns leading scorer with 14 goals and 13 assists for 41 points on the year. McDonald boasts seven goals and three assists for 17 points.
First team all-BIG EAST senior forward Laura Kane, who notched the game-winner over SMU, is WVU's most experienced veteran and has eight goals and nine assists for 25 points on the year. Junior midfielder Marisa Kanela, a second team all-BIG EAST honoree, is the Mountaineers leading scorer with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points.
Matt Wells and Michael Minnich will broadcast the game live on Yahoo! Sports (accessible via MSNsportsNET.com) and livestats can be found at www.ncaachampionships.com.
