Volleyball: WVU Swept by Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to BIG EAST rival Syracuse by a 3-0 (20-30, 22-30, 27-30) margin on Friday, Nov. 12, in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Mountaineers (18-12, 4-5) were unable to get into a positive rhythm at any point during the match. The Orange (25-5, 8-1) came out of the blocks with a 30-20 victory in game one before scoring a 30-22 win going into intermission. Syracuse finished off West Virginia with a hard-fought 30-27 victory in the third and final game of the evening.
Junior Stephanie Zolna led WVU offensively with 10 kills while fellow junior Kelly Mullins recorded nine and senior Alison Zemanski registered eight.
Senior setter Brandice Studnicka tallied 30 assists on the evening while sophomore Aurora Ebert-Santos compiled a match-high 14 digs. Mullins finished the match with nine digs while Zolna chipped in with seven.
The loss officially eliminates West Virginia from postseason consideration. The Mountaineers will close out the 2004 season on Sunday, Nov. 14, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to take on Notre Dame.
