PROVIDENCE – Connecticut quarterback Dan Orlovsky was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Defensive honors were shared by Syracuse’s James Wyche and West Virginia’s Mike Lorello. Syracuse’s Brendan Carney took Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.
Orlovsky set a BIG EAST record for completions and his passing yards total tied for the fifth highest in league history in Connecticut’s 42-30 loss at Syracuse. The 6-5 senior was 39-of-51 for 445 yards. He threw three touchdown passes. The completion and passing yards totals were also school records. Nationally, only Texas Tech quarterback Sonny Cumbie has completed more passes in a game this season. During the Syracuse contest, Orlovsky, a native of Shelton, Conn., became UConn’s all-time leader in passing yards (9,715), completions (821) and total offense (9,419).
Wyche, a junior defensive end from Roosevelt, N.Y., helped Syracuse beat UConn by making seven tackles, including three sacks. Four of his tackles accounted for lost yardage – three sacks were for 24 yards. He also forced a fumble.
Lorello is a 6-1 junior defensive back from Powell, Ohio. He had eight tackles – all solo – in West Virginia’s 35-30 win at Rutgers. Three of his tackles were for lost yardage, including one sack. He also recovered a fumble.
Carney, a 6-5 sophomore from Valley Forge, Pa., handled the punting and placekicking chores in Syracuse’s victory over Connecticut. He punted four times for a 50.0 average, including a long of 55 yards. Carney connected on all six of his extra point attempts and had three touchbacks on kickoffs. It is the second time this season Carney was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
