Volleyball: WVU Sweeps St. Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The West Virginia University volleyball team began their weekend road trip with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-28, 30-24) victory over St. Peter's on Saturday, Oct. 9, in Jersey City, N.J.
After taking a 3-0 lead right off the bat in game one, the two teams traded punches to make the score 10-7. From that point forward, the Mountaineers (12-7) routed the Peacocks, outscoring the home team 21-8 to take the 30-15 victory.
West Virginia picked up right where it left off in game one when it took a 7-2 lead in the second game after a successful block by senior Alison Zemanski. St. Peters took the momentum away from the Mountaineers when it went on a 10-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. The teams traded points before West Virginia rallied to tie the score at 16. With the game tied at 24, WVU went on a quick 5-2 spurt to take a 29-26 lead that it would never relinquish. West Virginia held off a late Peacock run to win the game 30-28.
The two squads traded points to begin game three before St. Peter's outscored WVU 5-1 to gain a 9-5 advantage. West Virginia used their own 8-4 run to even the game at 13. With the contest tied at 19, the Mountaineers turned on the afterburners and outscored St. Peter's 11-5 to win the third and deciding game by a score of 30-24.
Leading the Mountaineers offensively was junior Julie Hockenson who finished the match with 15 kills and an attack percentage of .591. Zemanski and junior Stephanie Zolna each tallied 11 kills while junior Kelly Mullins finished with nine. Zemanski's eleven kills came on just 14 attempts with no errors for a team-leading attack percentage of .786.
Senior Brandice Studnicka led West Virginia with 39 assists, an average of 13 per game. Defensively WVU was led by Studnicka and freshman Megan Carroll who each recorded 13 digs. Zolna registered 10 while Mullins had five on the afternoon.
St. Peter's was led by Valeria Kovaleva who recorded 15 kills and Michal Hausfater who finished with 17 assist. Kovaleva led the team in the dig category as well after finishing with 11 on the day.
Saturday's win marks West Virginia's eighth victory in its last nine matches. The Mountaineers open their 2004 BIG EAST schedule on Sunday, Oct. 10, when they take on St. John's at 3 p.m. in Jamaica, N.Y.
