INDIANOLA, Pa. - The No.19 West Virginia University women's soccer team pummeled BIG EAST foe Pitt 6-1 on Wednesday night at Founders Field.
Senior Laura Kane and freshman Natalie Cocchi each scored two goals to lead the Mountaineers (10-3-0,4-2-0) to their second highest scoring output of the season.
West Virginia got on the board in the 28th minute with a penalty kick goal from Kane after junior Marisa Kanela was taken down in the box.
Kane notched her second goal of the night just three minutes later when she headed a long ball from fellow senior Ashley Weimer past Panther goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi at 30:22.
Pitt's only goal of the night came at 42:38 when a defensive mistake left Panther Cara Senger with a shot from 18 yards out.
After maintaining its 2-1 lead for most of the second half by not allowing the Panthers a shot, WVU went on a four-goal scoring flurry over an 11 minute span to round out the match. Cocchi opened the barrage at the 76:14 mark when she headed in her third goal of the season off Weimer's second assist of the night.
In the 82nd minute, freshman midfielder Ashley Banks took two Pittsburgh defenders on one-versus-one and buried her fifth score of the year to the near post.
With six minutes left to play Kanela bent a Mountaineer corner kick directly into the goal to give West Virginia a 5-1 lead.
Cocchi completed the match scoring with her second goal of the night at 87:15.
"We came out in the second half with intensity and finished our chances," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. "It was a total team effort tonight with scoring coming from a variety of places. I'm proud of our effort. This was a great win for us."
With the loss, Pitt falls to 4-5-1, 1-3-1 on the year.
The Mountaineers return to action with a non-conference match at noon on Sunday, October 10, at Binghamton.
