Volleyball: WVU Falls to Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (22-30, 30-24, 17-30, 25-30) decision to intrastate rival Marshall on Tuesday, Oct. 5, in Huntington, W.Va.
Tuesday’s loss snapped West Virginia’s seven match winning streak and marked the first time the Mountaineers have suffered a defeat since falling 3-0 to then No. 5 Penn State on Sept. 18.
Despite coming out on the losing end, junior Stephanie Zolna was stellar compiling a total of 19 kills and 22.5 points. Junior Kelly Mullins recorded 10 kills while senior Alison Zemanski had eight and sophomore Gina Cusanelli added seven.
Senior Brandice Studnicka was once again the Mountaineer assist leader after tallying 44 on the evening.
Sophomore Aurora Ebert-Santos led WVU in digs with 15 while Mullins registered 13 and Cusanelli added 10.
Marshall was paced by a balanced offensive attack from Kelly-Anne Billingy, Stephanie Cahill and Amber Sims who recorded 16, 14 and 13 kills respectively. Katie Stein registered 55 assists for the Herd while both Cahill and Maggie Arias tallied 20 digs.
The loss drops West Virginia’s record to 11-7 while Marshall improved their yearly mark to 9-6. The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 9, when they travel to Jersey City, N.J., to battle St. Peters. WVU opens BIG EAST play the following day when they play at St. John’s on Oct. 10.
