PITTSBURGH - The West Virginia University rowing team battled poor river conditions on the Ohio to finish strong on Saturday, Oct. 2, in Pittsburgh, Pa., in the Head of the Ohio.
Debris clogged the race course at times, forcing one of WVU's two person skulls to withdraw because a tree log knocked off its fin during a race.
Heading the competition for the Mountaineers was senior Meg Ayers who won the Womens Club 1x event. Ayers took the event in a time of 23:30.61, beating the second place finisher by almost two and a half minutes.
In the Womens Open 2- event WVU placed two skulls. The Mountaineer B skull took second place behind Boston University with a time of 21:31.56, while the A skull rowed to a sixth place finish in 29:51.56.
In Womens Club 4+ competition WVU's A boat raced to a time of 20:02.01, good enough for third place behind a pair of teams from SUNY Buffalo. The team's B boat took seventh.
The Mountaineers also had a pair of boats race in the Womens Open 8+. The B boat finished fourth in a time of 17:37.28. The A boat raced to a 10th-place finish.

WVU hits the water again on Sunday, Oct. 24, when it competes in the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass. Racing takes place all day.
