Game captains for West Virginia against Rutgers were Ben Lynch, John Pennington, Mo Howard and Rasheed Marshall. Coach Rich Rodriguez selects game captains each week. Team captains will be elected at the end of the season.
Pernell Williams and Brad Palmer were first-time starters for West Virginia in today’s game. The Mountaineers now have a total of 40 players with at least one game of starting experience.
Jahmile Addae’s interception in the first quarter was his first interception of the season and fifth of his career.
Pernell Williams’ five-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter was his second rushing touchdown of the season. His other touchdown was a 13-yard run against Connecticut earlier this month.
West Virginia has scored first in every game this season, except for Virginia Tech.
Rasheed Marshall’s touchdown run in the first quarter was his third rushing touchdown of the season and 24th of his career, which ranks him fourth all-time at WVU in career rushing touchdowns. Marshall (64) is now within two touchdowns of tying Ira Errett Rodgers' 85-year record of 66 touhdowns responsible for.
With a 14-7 first quarter lead, the Mountaineers have now outscored their opponents 66-16 in the first quarter this season.
Dee McCann’s interception in the second quarter was the first of his career. He becomes the ninth different Mountaineer to pick off a pass this season.
Dee McCann’s two forced fumbles were the first two of his career. He also recovered one of those fumbles, which was the first recovery of his career. The other fumble was recovered by Mike Lorello, which was his second fumble recovery of the season and third of his career.
Kay-Jay Harris’ touchdown run in the second quarter was his seventh rushing touchdown of the season and 11th of his career.
West Virginia’s 12-play, 90-yard drive was its longest drive of the season. The Mountaineers added another eight-play, 90-yard drive in the fourth quarter. The previous long was a six-play, 87-yard drive last week against Syracuse.
Miquelle Henderson’s four-yard touchdown reception was his first of the season and sixth of his career. The touchdown pass was the 13th of the season for Rasheed Marshall and 39th of his career.
Rasheed Marshall moved into fifth place all-time in career passing yards at WVU, passing Dan Kendra (1974-77) who had 4,781. Marshall now shows 4,884 career passing yards.
Marshall now has 14 career 200-yard career total offensive games, ranking him third all time.
Chris Henry’s 39-yard touchdown reception was his 10th of the season and 20th of his career. The touchdown pass was the 14th of the season for Marshall and 40th of his career. Henry's 119 receiving ayrds were the first time this year the junior has topped 100 yards in a game.
Brad Cooper moved into fifth place in career PATs made with 80, passing Bill McKenzie (1974-77) with 77.
Jason Colson rushed for 103 yards on 19 carries marking the third consecutive game in which he has rushed for the century mark. It marks the 19th time in WVU history that a running back has rushed for 100 yards in three consecutive games. Colson is now within 18 yards of Kay-Jay Harris (640 yards) of assuming the team rushing lead.
Marshall's 505 rushing yards is now fifth on the WVU single-season quarterback rushing list. Marshall's 2002 rushing total of 666 yards ranks second to Major Harris' school record total of 936 produced in 1989.
West Virginia has now won 10 consecutive games against Rutgers and owns a 26-4-2 all-time record in the series. WVU is also now 12-4-2 all-time at Rutgers.
West Virginia has now won 28 games in a row when scoring 30 points or more in a game. Dating back to 1980, the Mountaineers hold a 107-6-1 record when scoring 30 or more. WVU is 25-0 since 2000 when scoring 30 or more.
