Volleyball? WVU Extends Win Streak to Seven

LORETTO, Pa. – The West Virginia University volleyball team extended their winning streak to seven matches after wins over Binghamton, Canisius and St. Francis on Oct. 1-2 in St. Francis, Pa.
On Friday, the Mountaineers (11-6) defeated Binghamton 3-0 (30-23, 30-23, 30-26) on the strength of 12 kills from both senior Alison Zemanski and sophomore Gina Cusanelli.
Senior Brandice Studnicka and sophomore Kailee Goold led WVU in assists with 30 and 22 respectively. Defensively the Mountaineers were paced by Cusanelli who registered 16 digs and sophomore Aurora Ebert-Santos who finished with 13.
West Virginia began Saturday’s doubleheader with a 3-0 (30-28, 30-20, 30-22) victory over Canisius. Leading West Virginia offensively was Zemanski who tallied 13 kills and junior Julie Hockenson who registered 10.
Stucknicka had 33 assists while Goold recorded 10. Pacing the Mountaineers in digs was Ebert-Santos who registered 14 and Cusanelli who had 12.
WVU’s final match of the weekend was a 3-0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-21) shutout of host St. Francis. Zemanski was the offensive leader for the third consecutive match with 16 kills while junior Stephanie Zolna tallied 12.
Studnicka shined as WVU’s assist leader again with 43 while Ebert-Santos recorded a 20-dig performance. Studnicka tallied 15 digs while Zolna had 13.
The Mountaineers look for their eighth consecutive victory when they travel to Huntington, W.Va., on Tuesday, Oct. 5, for a 7 p.m. match with intrastate rival Marshall.
