MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team hosts Rutgers in its final BIG EAST conference match of the season on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers (10-6-0) have already put together one of the most unanticipated turnarounds in the BIG EAST this season. Picked to finish 11th in the preseason conference poll WVU is currently tied with Seton Hall for fourth with a 5-4-0 BIG EAST record. Entering the 2004 season the Mountaineers had only won four total conference games in the their previous four seasons.
Although Wednesday's 2-1 double overtime victory over Pitt clinched WVU's first postseason berth since 1999, head coach Mike Seabolt says the Mountaineers still have a lot to play for.
"We've clinched a spot in the BIG EAST tournament but we still have a lot of things to play for in terms of seeding for the tournament and finishing out strong," says Seabolt.
The Scarlet Knights' (6-8-3) match against WVU is their last match of the 2004 season. Although they are eliminated from the tournament race they will still be playing to finish their season on a high note. Rutgers is 2-5-3 in the conference and has lost its last four BIG EAST matches.
"It's a game we have to maintain our focus on and do whatever it takes to get the win," says Seabolt.
The Mountaineers last win against the Scarlet Knights came in 1999 when they won 2-1 in Morgantown. Rutgers leads the all-time series 12-1-1.
