Senior Greg Jones, junior Matt Lebe and sophomore Zac Fryling will participate in this premiere event that kicks off each USA Wrestling season. Arizona State University will host the longest standing international open tournament in the United States.
Two-time NCAA champion Jones returns for his senior season with a unanimous No. 1 ranking at 184 pounds. The Slickville, Pa., native is a three-time Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) champion and became the first Mountaineer to complete an undefeated season going a perfect 26-0 as a junior.
Lebe, who is wrestling in perhaps the country's toughest weight class at 157 pounds, tallied a team-high 31 wins last season, reaching the round of 12 at NCAAs. The Jeannette, Pa., native has notched 50 victories in two seasons with the Mountaineers.
Fryling generated lot of excitement while wrestling as a true freshman last season at 165 pounds. He earned all-rookie honors from Amateur Wrestling News en route to a 19-14 record. The Lansdale, Pa., native was one of seven NCAA qualifiers for the Mountaineers in 2004.
Along with the wrestling action on the mats this weekend, WVU assistant head coach and 1992 Olympic Silver Medalist Zeke Jones and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Rulon Gardner will conduct a coaches and wrestlers clinic. A three-time All-American at ASU, Jones was recently enshrined into the Arizona State Hall of Fame on Sept. 25.
The Mountaineer wrestling team opens its season in the Shell Building on Sunday, Nov. 7, with the 23rd annual WVU Open.
