PROVIDENCE – Boston College quarterback Paul Peterson was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after rallying his team to a 24-23 win at Notre Dame. Josh Lay of Pittsburgh and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones of West Virginia shared Defensive Player of the Week honors and Pittsburgh placekicker Josh Cummings was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Peterson, a 6-0, 184-pound senior from Ephraim, Utah, threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tony Gonzalez with 54 seconds left to give the Eagles their fourth straight victory over Notre Dame. Peterson helped BC recover from a 20-7 halftime deficit by completing 19-of-23 passes for 297 yards in the second half, including two touchdown throws. For the game, he was 27-of-41 for a career-high 383 yards.
Lay returned an interception 82 yards for a touchdown in Pittsburgh’s 41-17 victory over Rutgers. The junior cornerback, who is a native of Aliquippa, Pa., broke up three other passes and was credited with four tackles. The Panther defense allowed the Scarlet Knights only 56 yards on the ground.
Jones, a 5-11 junior cornerback from College Park, Ga., recorded six solo tackles and one assist in West Virginia’s 27-6 win over Syracuse. Two of his tackles resulted in losses of 12 yards. He also notched his first career sack. The Mountaineer defense yielded only 66 yards rushing to the Orange.
Cummings scored 11 points and made all seven of his kicks in the Panthers’ triumph over Rutgers. The junior college transfer, who is from Newhall, Calif., hit field goals from 47 and 40 yards and connected on all five extra point attempts. The 47-yard boot was a career long.
