MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - - The No. 16 West Virginia University women’s soccer team was upset Sunday afternoon 1-0 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium by Georgetown.
The Hoyas (8-8-1, 4-4-1) capitalized on a West Virginia (14-4-0, 7-3-0) foul 20 yards from the goal early in the first half to net the only score of the match. Karen Waskewich sent a direct kick into the left upper 90 at the 8:32 mark.
The Mountaineers outshot the Hoyas 26-2, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. WVU’s best chance came seconds before the Georgetown score when senior Laura Kane rifled a shot from the right side of the 18 yard line that hit the crossbar and fell straight down, but not into the goal.
West Virginia amassed 17 shots in the second half and had several near-scores in the waning minutes of the match, but were unable to capitalize.
“When you allow a team an opportunity, they are going to take it,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We played with 45 minutes of intensity today, but that’s not enough in a 90 minute game.”
Following the match, four West Virginia seniors, Leslie Barden, Maura Cirilli, Kane and Ashley Weimer, were honored in a Senior Day presentation.
“This group of seniors will be greatly missed,” said Izzo-Brown. “I always say that when you commit to WVU you commit to a family, and this family will certainly miss each and everyone one of these four. I respect and admire them all. Thank you seniors.”
West Virginia will return to action next Sunday at 1 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST tournament. The opponent will be announced mid-week.
