WEST POINT, N.Y. – The West Virginia University rifle team lost its first Great America Rifle Conference match and its first road match of the season on Saturday, Oct. 23, with a 4645-4552 loss to Army at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center in West Point, N.Y.
The Mountaineers (0-2, 0-1) compiled a 2272 aggregate smallbore score and a 2280 air rifle score in the defeat, while Army posted scores of 2315 and 2330, respectively.
Freshman Lafe Kunkel shot a career-high 584 in smallbore bettering his first-match result last week vs. Navy by 16 points. With a 577 in air rifle, Kunkel nearly led the Mountaineers in both disciplines if not for classmate Amy Smith firing her personal best of 578 in air rifle. Smith’s score in air was a 14-point improvement from her first match last week. Smith also shot the second-best smallbore score on the team with a 570.
Other scores for WVU in smallbore were Brian Launer with a 567 and Eric Hensil with a 551. In air rifle, Launer and Hensil shot 569 and 556, respectively.
Black Knight freshman Chris Abalo led all scores in both disciplines with a 581 in smallbore and a 585 in air rifle. Army improves to 2-0 overall and in the GARC after defeating Kentucky earlier this month.
West Virginia is at home for the remainder of the calendar year and returns to action Nov. 5 for an alumni match at noon. The Mountaineers’ next dual match is Nov. 13 when they host GARC-opponent Ole Miss at the Mountaineer Rifle Range beginning at 8 a.m.
