Swimming: Lopez Gets First Win at WVU

Morgantown, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's swimming and diving team defeated Xavier, while the women defeated the Musketeers but lost to Marshall on Friday, Oct. 22, in Huntington, W.Va.
The Mountaineer men (1-1-0) prevailed over the Musketeers (0-1-0) by a score of 126.00- 83.00. WVU's women (1-2-0) dominated Xavier (0-2-0) as well by a score of 126.00-95.00, however, dropped its contest to Marshall (4-0-0) 159.00-66.00.
The men's team jumped onto Xavier early by placing its 200 IM relay teams first and second. Rick Mann, Felipe Cunha, Pedro Pinto and Matt Drozd headed the first place relay in a time of 1:34.27.
Pinto and sophomore Nathan Fuhrman finished one-two in the 200 Free. Pinto finished first in 1:46.74 and Fuhrman took second in 1:49.68.
Chris Hagedorn won the 50 Free in 21.29 with Kyle Williams (21.54) and Mann (21.83) right behind him in second and third.
Freshman Pablo Marmolejo had a stellar evening, winning the 400 IM (4:01.12) as well as the 200 Back (1:53.72). Marmolejo beat the second place finishers in the two races by a combined 20 seconds.
Fellow freshman Felipe Cunha also won an event when he clocked in at 2:07.36 in the 200 Breast.
The men swam very good in the 200 Free relays as well. Drozd, Williams, Hagedorn and Mann won with a time of 1:23.50 and Fuhrman, Tommy Fletcher, Sammy Bird and Kyle Gallo finished third in 1:29.93.
The women also received some very good swims from its athletes as well. Erin Tudor won the 100 Free in 53.69. Tina Gabrilo also placed first in the meet. The Split, Croatia, native took the 200 Back in 2:09.04 and freshman Bonnie Sutton finished second in 2:11.82.
Junior Megan Carlson won the 200 yard Breast in 2:25.42, just a little over a second ahead of Xavier's Krystal Kooyman (2:26.40).
Closing out their racing for the night the Mountaineer women's 200 Free relay finished in 1:39.68, edging Xavier's squad. Tudor, Livia Cascao, Manuela Trabert and Elyse Fisher combined on the victory.
Both Mountaineer teams return to action when they face Duquesne and Youngstown (women only) on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the WVU Natatorium. Racing begins at 9 a.m.
