Rifle: First Road Match Saturday at West Point

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team will make its first road trip of the 2004-05 season Saturday, Oct. 23, when the Mountaineers visit West Point, N.Y., to face Army in Great America Rifle Conference action. The match will begin 8 a.m., at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
West Virginia (0-1, 0-0 GARC) is coming off a 4650-4560 loss in its home opener vs. Navy on Sunday, Oct. 17. Freshmen Amy Smith, with a 573 score in smallbore, and Lafe Kunkel with a 584 air rifle score led the Mountaineers in the loss.
Army (1-0, 1-0 GARC), which returns all seven letter winners from last year, is coming off a 4647-4588 win over Kentucky in its GARC opener on Oct. 9. Freshman Christopher Abalo, regarded as the top male recruit in the country, led the Black Knights in both disciplines with scores of 591 in air and 586 in smallbore.
West Virginia leads the all-time series with Army, 28-6, which dates back to 1957 and includes a Mountaineer win in their last meeting at West Point on Nov. 23, 2002.
