PROVIDENCE – West Virginia quarterback Rasheed Marshall was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Mountaineers to a 31-19 victory at Connecticut. Defensive Player of the Week honors were shared by Pittsburgh linebacker H.B. Blades and Rutgers’ defensive back Ron Girault. Rutgers’ placekicker Jeremy Ito was selected Special Teams Player of the Week.
Marshall, a 6-1 senior from Pittsburgh, Pa., passed for 138 yards and rushed for 110 yards in the win at UConn. He completed 12-of-20 passes and threw for one touchdown. Marshall became the first WVU quarterback to gain more than 100 yards rushing in a game since Major Harris in 1989.
Blades spearheaded a Pittsburgh defense that helped beat Boston College, 20-17 in overtime. The 6-0, 240-pound sophomore from Plantation, Fla., made a game-high 13 tackles. The Panther defense allowed only 56 yards rushing. The Eagles went into the game averaging 183.6 yards per game.
Girault, a true freshman defensive back, made a big splash in his first career start, a 16-6 win over Temple. The native of Spring Valley, N.Y., also posted 13 tackles. In addition, his fourth-quarter interception helped set up a field goal to put the Scarlet Knights ahead, 9-6.
Ito is also a Scarlet Knight true freshman. A native of Redlands, Calif., Ito made all three of his field goal attempts and connected on an extra point in the victory over Temple. His field goals came from 43, 27 and 38 yards. For the season, Ito has hit 4-of-6 from beyond 40 yards.
