MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team posted three flight champions and one flight runner-up after a solid day of competition on Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Martha Thorn Invitational in Morgantown, W.Va.
The Mountaineers finished the tournament with a singles record of 17-4 and a doubles mark of 7-1. Overall, WVU came out of the tournament with a 24-5 record.
Freshman Monica Lyskawa advanced to the flight A singles title after defeating Candice Carlin of Villanova, 10-8, while fellow freshman Natalia Prinz fell to George Mason’s Andrea Fuser, 10-6, in the other semifinal. In the flight A championship, Fuser defeated Lyskawa, 10-8, in a well played match to win the title.
Junior Raynie Theis plowed through the competition to win the flight B bracket. The Bloomington, Minn., native defeated Leah Friedman of Pitt, 10-0, in the semifinals before ousting Pitt’s Emily Hughes by a score of 10-3 in the championship.
Flight C boasted an all-Mountaineer final when freshman Stacey Percival topped Pitt’s Michelle Petrasko, 10-3, and sophomore Catherine Koontz outlasted Sotera Gacad-Cowen of Pitt, 10-0, in the semifinals. In an effort to increase the pace of play, the championship game was postponed and will be played later in the week.
The flight A doubles bracket boasted the second all-WVU final of the weekend. The tandem of Theis and Percival defeated Villanova’s Speaker and Flezzani by a mark of 8-4 while Percival and sophomore Kelly Walsh ousted George Mason’s Fusea and Balleste, 8-4, in the semifinals. The flight A doubles championship was postponed as well and will be made up later in the week.
“I was proud of the way our girls finished the weekend,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “We made some major strides and competed well in a lot of tough matches. We are looking forward to a hard week of practice and can’t wait for the opportunity to play some of the best competition in the region next weekend.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Oct. 21-26 when they travel to Philadelphia to compete in the annual ITA regional championships.
