WVU’s third place finish was achieved without the services of senior Tara Struyk who took the day off to rest for the BIG EAST championships. No. 2 Providence won the race with 49 points while No. 5 Duke placed second (60), West Virginia placed third (194), No. 29 Boston College placed fourth (198) and Cornell finished fifth (210).
Senior Megan Metcalfe led the Mountaineer effort after posting a fourth place finishing time of 20:41. Senior Jennifer Davis finished 13th (21:12), junior Susan Davis placed 36th (21:57), senior Jennifer Kemp crossed the line in 54th (22:19) and senior Rachel Carden finished 87th (22:42).
Senior Devon Plesuk (97th) and freshman Nicole Lemal (111th) rounded out the WVU effort after recorded times of 22:47 and 23:03 respectively.
“Finishing third in a field of this caliber is a monstrous performance,” assistant coach Sean Cleary says. “After having three weeks off like we did you have a tendency to get stale. Our girls did a great job of coming in here, staying focused and getting the job done.”
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Oct. 29, when they travel to Boston to compete in the 2004 BIG EAST championships.
