PITTSBURGH – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team opened the first day of competition by winning 12 of its 13 singles matches at the Pittsburgh YMCA on Friday, Oct. 15, at the Martha Thorn Invitational.
In the first round of flight A singles, sophomore Kelly Walsh defeated Katie Muething of Mt. St. Mary’s by a score of 10-2. Freshman Natalia Prinz outlasted Maricel Ballester of George Mason, 10-7, while fellow freshman Monica Lyskawa advanced with a bye.
In the quarterfinals, Lyskawa topped Jenn Dektas of GMU, 10-4, while Prinz defeated Colleen Speaker of Villanova, 10-5. West Virginia’s only loss of the day came when Walsh fell in a hard-nosed match to Candice Carlin of Villanova, 10-7.
The Mountaineers were undefeated in flight B singles behind strong efforts from sophomore Ashley Constantine and junior Raynie Theis. Constantine defeated Meaghan McKenna of Loyola College by a score of 10-3 in the first round before breezing by Whitney Edmonds of Mt. St. Mary’s, 10-2.
Theis dominated Ashley Wentzel of MSM by a score of 10-1 before topping Villanova’s Courtney Flezzani, 10-7, in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Stacey Percival and sophomore Catherine Koontz were WVU’s participants in flight C action. Percival began the day by defeating Janet Reuter of Loyola College, 10-1, before blasting Jackie Sherbondy of GMU by the same score.
Koontz defeated Christina Pace of MSM in a quick 10-1 match before squeezing by Carlie Smith of Pitt, 10-6.
“I think our overall record today speaks for how well our girls played this afternoon,” coach Dan Silverstein says. “This was another breakout performance for us and I couldn’t be happier with the effort from our team. We know we can’t hang our hat on this performance too long though. The competition gets tougher the farther you advance so our girls are going to have to be ready for another fierce day of tennis.”
Saturday marks the beginning of the doubles tournament as well as the continuation of singles competition.
Weather permitting, Saturday’s matches will be held at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex adjacent to the WVU Coliseum. In the case of inclement conditions, the tournament will once again be hosted by the Pittsburgh YMCA.
