PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 18 West Virginia University women’s soccer team battled rain and slippery conditions to defeat Rutgers 2-0 on Friday night at Yurcak Field.
West Virginia (12-3-0, 6-2-0) got on the board early when senior defender Ashley Weimer sent a long ball off a free kick into the box and junior Marisa Kanela flicked it past Rutgers’ (9-8, 4-4) goalkeeper Robyn Jones in the 13th minute.
The match remained 1-0 until the 53:12 mark when freshman Ashley Banks netted her seventh goal of the season. Banks received the ball on the near side at the six yard line after forwards Rachael Minnich and Laura Kane connected a pair of headers toward Banks. Banks took two touches and buried the ball into the far corner of the Rutgers goal.
West Virginia nearly made the score 3-0 five minutes later off a corner kick from Marisa Kanela. Kanela’s service found the head of Natalie Cocchi who powerfully headed the ball far post. A Rutgers defender holding at the post saved the would-be goal to keep the score 2-0 WVU.
The Mountaineers earned their fifth shutout of the season with the victory. West Virginia has now won four straight matches against Rutgers.
The Mountaineers return to action at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 17, when they face Seton Hall at Owen T. Carroll Field.
In the past the Pirates have been a handful for the Mountaineers, winning three and tying one of their eight previous meetings.
Notes: West Virginia has now outscored its opponents 21-6 in the second half this season ... the Mountaineers produced their fifth shutout of the season after having allowed at least one goal in the prior six consecutive matches ... following Sunday's conference match at Seton Hall, West Virginia winds up the non-conference portion of its regular season Oct. 22 at home against Radford.
