A three-run fifth inning got the Gold team on the scoreboard and they never looked back. Dustin Woodring lined a ball up the middle scoring two Mountaineers for a 2-1 Gold advantage. Captain Lee Fritz followed with an RBI single to left field to push the lead to 3-1.
The Blue squad cut the deficit in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Blue captain Travis D’Amico executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Brandon Drespling and make it 3-2.
In the eighth inning, the Gold’s David Carpenter smoked a fastball to left center scoring two and making it 5-2.
One inning later, Stephen Viccica lengthened the lead on an RBI double, plating a hustling Adrian Sykes. Woodring tallied his third RBI of the game on a fielder’s choice and breaking up a double play to push the lead to 7-2.
Giving solid outings for the Gold were pitchers Ryan Gisolfi and Michael Burger. The duo combined for five innings pitched, giving up just one run on four hits and allowing just one walk.
Blue starter Kenny Durst was nearly perfect in tossing four innings of no hit, scoreless baseball.
Tyler Kuhn went 2-for-3 from the plate and drew a walk to pace the Blue team.
The Mountaineers conclude fall practice two events coming up this weekend. The 5th annual Fall Showcase Camp will take place on Saturday, October 16 at Noon. The final event is on Sunday, October 17, as WVU players participate in the 9th annual Marathon Baseball Game, beginning at noon.
