Morgantown, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team dropped their first home match of the season against St. Francis (Pa.) 2-1 on Friday, Oct. 1.
The Mountaineers (5-5-0) got off to a slow start in the first half and the Red Flash (2-4-1) took advantage. In the 32nd minute a ball was sent in to the Mountaineer penalty box and defender Rusty Girton used a hard tackle to bring down SFU forward Scott Thompson, which the referee awarded a penalty kick for.
Thompson nailed a hard shot off of the penalty kick past WVU goalkeeper Nick Noble to put his team up 1-0.
The Mountaineers would answer six minutes later. A WVU midfielder sent a ball into the St. Francis penalty box which got knocked around several times before coming to rest about 10 yards from the goal mouth. Freshman Geoff Cameron saw the opportunity and netted his first collegiate goal.
St. Francis went into the half with a 7-5 lead in shots taken. The Red Flash would prove to be even better defensively in the second half as it allowed only two Mountaineer shots in the second half.
St. Francis defender Gary Burke provided the game winner in the 84th minute. The Red Flash earned a free kick after a foul and Burke booted it in from 25 yards out.
The Mountaineers return to action Sunday, Oct. 3, when they host Longwood at 3 p.m. as part of Super Soccer Sunday.
