STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Janae Cox won the all-around with a score of 39.375 and tied Penn State’s Cecile Allen for first on the floor with a score of 9.875 to help West Virginia to a second-place finish at Penn State Saturday night.
Host Penn State, ranked No. 18, won the quad meet with a score of 195.675, followed by No. 22 West Virginia (195.25), Rhode Island (189.325) and Yale (189.25).
West Virginia’s 195.25 score was its highest on the road this year and victories over Yale and Rhode Island boost WVU’s overall record to 6-3-1. Mountaineer coach Linda Burdette is now 493-301-3 and needs seven more victories to become just the third coach in all sports at WVU with 500 career wins.
The other two coaches with 500 wins are the late Dale Ramsburg in baseball and current volleyball coach Veronica Hammersmith.
Cox was the star of the meet Saturday for the Mountaineers. In addition to claim top honors in the all-around and floor, the rising freshman finished second on the vault with a score of 9.85 to tie a season high.
Junior Kari Williams won the vault with a season-high score of 9.9. It is the sixth time in her career she has scored 9.9 or higher in that event.
Jessica Bartgis finished second to Cox in the all-around with a score of 39.15; Alyssa DeSantis was WVU’s top performer on beam with a score of 9.85 to place third and Bartgis was the Mountaineers’ top scorer on bars with a score of 9.85 to finish third.
West Virginia is back in action next Sunday, Feb. 8, at the WVU Coliseum against Cornell.
