MONROEVILLE, Pa. - The West Virginia University women's tennis team (1-0) opened the 2004 season by defeating Wright State, 6-1, on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, Pa.
In singles action, freshmen Ashley Constantine and Kelly Walsh, sophomore Melissa Day and seniors Jennifer Watkins and Courtney Howell were all victorious in their respective matches.
The doubles tandems of Day and Watkins, Howell and Constantine and Raynie Theis and Walsh combined to sweep the afternoon's doubles matches over the Raiders.
"I'm was really impressed by how our freshmen played in their Mountaineer debuts," coach Dan Silverstein said. "As a team I thought we played great tennis today, but we know we have to continue to improve if we want to accomplish the goals we have set for ourselves this season."
The Mountaineers open BIG EAST play on Sunday, Feb. 1, when they travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to take on nationally ranked Miami.
"Miami is an outstanding team," says Silverstein. "It's going to be a great early season challenge for us, but we are excited to compete against one of the top programs in the country."
