MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The West Virginia University women's tennis team will open the 2004 season when they host Wright State on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Oxford Athletic Club in Monroeville, Pa.
The Mountaineers return four letterwinners from a squad that finished 12-10 last season, West Virginia's first winning record in eight years. Senior co-captains Jennifer Watkins and Courtney Howell, along with sophomore co-captain Melissa Day, will be responsible for playing a major leadership role as the season progresses.
"We are looking for Jenny, Courtney and Melissa to be big time leaders for us this season," coach Dan Silverstein says. "Those girls should have an outstanding Spring."
Sophomore Raynie Theis and freshmen Ashley Constantine and Kelly Walsh are also expected to be major contributors in 2004.
"We are really looking forward to the debuts of Ashley Constantine and Kelly Walsh in a Mountaineer uniform," Silverstein says. "We also expect Raynie Theis to be outstanding for us again this season. We are expecting big things from those girls."
Sophomore Catherine Koontz will miss the 2004 season with a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The Lexington, N.C., native will be redshirted this season and available again for action next year as a sophomore.
"We will mourn the loss of Catherine from our lineup this Spring, but there is no question she will rebound and have an outstanding sophomore season next year," Silverstein says.
Wednesday's match is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
