Gymnastics: WVU and Pitt Tie; Denver 3rd

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 12 West Virginia University gymnastics team tied East Atlantic Gymnastics League rival Pitt for first place in a tri-meet with No. 16 Denver, Friday evening at the WVU Coliseum.

“Tying Pitt is like kissing your sister,” Coach Burdette said. “But it was a very exciting meet and it’s a very good score to have at home.”
The Mountaineers (4-2-1) and Panthers (4-1-1) each scored a 195.3 to share the victory over the Pioneers (1-7). It marked the first tie between the programs since 1986 when both teams scored a 177.5 in Morgantown. It was also the first tie for the Mountaineers since 1992. It marked just the third tie in Linda Burdette’s 30 seasons of coaching.
Senior Jessica Bartgis, a Frederick, Md., native, paced the Mountaineers with a 39.0 all-around score, her fourth career 39.0 or better score. She scored a career-best 9.875 on floor and 9.9 on vault. She also scored a 9.85 on bars but fell on beam and tallied a 9.35. For her efforts place third in the all-around and won the vault.
Freshman Janáe Cox placed third on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise with a 9.825, 9.85 and 9.85, respectively. She faltered on floor, falling on her first pass, on her way to a 9.35. Cox’s bars score was a career-best and despite her fall, still tallied a 38.875 all-around score.
Other Mountaineers tallied personal bests. Senior Emily Duryea scored a 9.725 on bars while freshman Sabrina Noonan tallied a 9.8 on the same apparatus.
The win marked the 491st of Burdette’s career.
West Virginia returns to action, Saturday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m., at Penn State with Rhode Island and Yale.
