Swimming: Mountaineers Swept at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The WVU swimming and diving team was swept by Syracuse (men: 110-133; women: 94-132), Saturday afternoon at Ted Webster Pool.
West Virginia received a strong performance by junior Pedro Pinto, who placed first in the 200 butterfly (1:53.37) and 200 individual medley (1:56.20) events.
All-BIG EAST freestyler Kleyton Franca earned a victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.26 while junior Matt Drozd notched a 21.26 to place first in the 50 freestyle. Franca also placed first in the 100 freestyle, stopping the clocks at 46.14.
The 400 freestyle relay squad of Kyle Williams, Kyle Gallo, Chris Hagedorn and Drozd claimed first-place with a time of 3:09.12.
For the WVU women’s team, freshman diver Jennifer Nyce won the one-meter and three-meter boards with scores of 235.34 and 241.35, respectively.
Livia Cascao swam a 53.66 in the 100 freestyle event while Elizabeth Cleary took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.86.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday, Jan. 18, when they travel to St. Bonaventure for a dual meet starting at 1 p.m.
