Men's Soccer: Smith Scores in Olympic Qualifier

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - West Virginia University men's soccer standout Jarrod Smith came off the bench for New Zealand on Wednesday night to tally a goal for his homeland in the squad's first Olympic qualifying match.
Smith was brought off of the bench in the 73rd minute in the match at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand. The WVU freshman made his presence known in the 93rd minute as he scored to help his country to a 9-0 win.
The team faces American Samoa on Friday, Jan. 16, at 5 p.m., in the second match of the Oceania Qualifying Tournament. The winner of the tournament goes on to the Olympics in Athens, Greece, later this year.
Smith led the WVU soccer team in scoring this past season with seven goals in 18 matches.
