Women's Basketball: WVU Ends Road Streak

JAMAICA, N.Y. – Michelle Carter and Sherell Sowho scored 16 points each to help West Virginia defeat St. John’s 69-67 Tuesday night at Alumni Hall in Jamaica, N.Y.
West Virginia snapped its 12-game Big East road losing streak Tuesday night; the Mountaineers last won a conference road game at St. John’s on Feb. 2, 2001.
Carter, a 6-foot-1 senior center, made 8 of 10 field goal attempts, pulled down 4 rebounds and blocked 2 shots for the Mountaineers, now 10-5, 2-2. Sowho was 5 of 10 from the floor including 4 of 7 from three-point distance for her 16 points. Sowho also grabbed 10 rebounds in 40 minutes of work.
Freshman Meg Bulger came off the bench to score a season-high 14 points. Bulger also grabbed 4 rebounds before fouling out.
Yolanda Paige scored 8 points and handed out 14 assists. Paige came into the game leading the conference in assists with an average of 7.3 per game.
St. John’s, now 7-7, 1-2, got 19 points and 13 rebounds off the bench from Danielle Chambers. Kim Mac Millan scored 18 and Angie Clark contributed 14.
St. John’s led 32-30 at halftime.
West Virginia shot 46.7 percent and 38.1 percent from three-point distance. St. John’s managed to hit 33.8 percent of its field goal attempts and only 18.2 percent of its three-point field goal attempts.
West Virginia returns to the court Saturday at the WVU Coliseum against Notre Dame, which shocked No. 4 Connecticut, 66-51 Tuesday night in South Bend. Saturday’s game will tip off at 4 pm and will be televised by the Mountaineer Sports Network.
Notebook: West Virginia now leads the St. John’s series by a 9-3 count … Yolanda Paige’s 14 assists were one shy of the WVU record of 15 set by Rosemary Kosiorek against Duquesne on Feb. 24, 1992 … It is the third time Paige has had 14 assists in a game for her career (Miami, 2-15-03 and Coppin State, 11-30-02) … Kate Bulger made her 98th consecutive start Tuesday night against St. John’s to lead all Big East players … Bulger is scheduled to make her 100th consecutive start on Wednesday, Jan. 21 against Marshall … Despite scoring only 7 points against St. John’s, Kate Bulger still moved past Georgeann Wells for eighth place in career scoring at WVU with 1,486 points … Wells scored 1,484 points from 1983-86 … Yahoo!
