MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 12th-ranked West Virginia University (1-2, 0-0) wrestling team fell 24-13 in dual meet action to 11th-ranked Penn State University (4-0, 0-0) on Saturday evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The Nittany Lions ended a three-match drought against the Mountaineers in taking six of ten matches from West Virginia. Penn State received strong performances from No. 3 ranked Josh Moore, No. 8 ranked Matt Storniolo and James Woodall in taking three of the first four matches on the night to open a 11-3 team lead.
“We wrestled against a very good team in Penn State tonight,” said head coach Craig Turnbull. “They had a lot of momentum coming in after big wins over Lehigh and Pitt. I think some of our guys could have wrestled better. Penn State came in and took care of business.”
The Mountaineers put points on the scoreboard in the 141-pound match with a Joe Clarke (141) 12-6 decision over DeWitt Driscoll. Clarke would strike first on a double-leg takedown for an early 2-0 lead. After Driscoll tied the score at 6-6, Clarke used two three-point near falls in the third period to secure the victory.
“Joe gave up some bad points early which was disappointing,” said Turnbull. “To his credit, he regrouped to split the score and come up with a win.”
True-freshman Zac Fryling (165) scored a 12-6 major decision over Jarrad Turner to narrow Penn State’s team lead to four. Fryling tallied five takedowns in controlling the entire match.
A pair of juniors were victorious in two exciting matches that featured all wrestlers ranked in the Top 20. No. 2 ranked Greg Jones (184) and No. 18 ranked Matt Daddino (197) rallied WVU back into contention by posting impressive 7-2 and 10-4 decisions. Jones defeated No. 12 Eric Bradley and Daddino upset No. 16 Joel Edwards.
WVU dropped matches at 125, 133, 149, 157, 174 and 285 on Saturday to the undefeated Nittany Lions.
The Mountaineers return to the mat tomorrow afternoon against Eastern Wrestling League foe Bloomsburg (3-4, 0-1) at 1 p.m. The dual meet on Sunday against the Huskies opens conference action for WVU.
