MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The WVU swimming and diving team was swept by conference rival Pitt on Saturday afternoon at the WVU Natatorium. The men lost by a 167.50-75.50 count while the women dropped a 164-73 decision.
On the men's side, Pitt's 400-yard medley relay team of Eric Bugby, Steve Marcucio, Jason Miller and Stephen Kilroy stopped the clocks at 3:25.84 to place first and set a new pool record, previously set by Pitt in 2002.
For West Virginia, Matt Drozd notched a first-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 21.22 and tied Pitt's Thomas Bird for first with a 47.14 in the 100 free event. WVU senior Can Eter claimed victory in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:09.59.
All-BIG EAST freestyler Kleyton Franca swam a 1:41.19 in the 200 freestyle event but was edged by Pitt's Eric Limkemann by one one-hundredth of a second to prevent victory.
The Mountaineer women notched a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle, with Elizabeth Cleary stopping the clocks at 24.94 to place first and Livia Cascao swimming a 25.08 to finish second.
WVU freshman diver Jennifer Nyce placed first on the three-meter boards while Ashley Bissett placed second in the 500 freestyle with a 5:12.27.
"Pitt is a tough team to face in our first meet back from our winter trip," said WVU coach Steve Phillips. "But I was happy with the way our team swam today. A couple more weeks of solid training and I think we'll see a steady improvement."
The Mountaineer men fell to 4-3 in dual meets while the women drop to 3-5. The team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when they hit the road to face BIG EAST foe Syracuse, at noon, at Webster Pool.
