Women's Tennis: WVU Wins Seven Flight Titles

The West Virginia University women's tennis team won seven out of a possible fourteen flights this past weekend at the 2003 Martha Thorn Invitational at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
Sophomore Melissa Day won the flight A singles championship with wins over Villanova (6-4, 7-5), Dayton (7-6 (5), 6-3) and American (default). Freshman Ashley Lynn Constantine defeated Villanova (6-2, 6-0), Pitt (5-7, 6-4, 10-2), Dayton (7-5, 6-7 (5), 10-4) and fellow teammate Jennifer Watkins in the championship match (6-3, 7-6) to win the flight B singles title.
The Mountaineers did not enter a competitor into flight C, while freshman Lindsay Bolar made the best of her opportunity in flight D by defeating James Madison (5-7, 6-1, 10-4), Maryland-Baltimore County (6-1, 6-0), Villanova (6-3, 6-4), American (6-2, 3-6, 10-7) and Army for the bracket championship.
In other singles action, sophomore Raynie Theis won the flight B consolation bracket by defeating American (6-4, 6-2), Villanova in the semifinals (8-5) and another competitor from Villanova in the finals (9-8, 7-2).
In doubles, the duo of Day and Theis defeated Dayton (8-3), Army (9-8, 8-6), Maryland-Baltimore County (8-6) and another team from Army in the finals (8-6) to win the flight A doubles championship. The flight B title was won by Constantine and sophomore Catherine Koontz who defeated James Madison (8-3), Villanova (8-4) and Bucknell (8-2).
Freshmen Sydney Thornhill and Rebekah Epstein won the flight C doubles consolation championship with victories over American (default) and Bucknell (8-6).
"I'm extremely proud of the way our team competed this weekend," said head coach Dan Silverstein. "Winning seven flights is quite an accomplishment and I think it just proves how deep we are capable of being this year. We're proud of what we accomplished this weekend and are looking forward to getting back to work to prepare for the Army Invitational."
The Mountaineers return to the court in two weeks when they hit the road to take part in the three-day Army Invitational from Sept. 19-21.
