The West Virginia University women's tennis team continued their dominance today in the 2003 Martha Thorn Invitational by having either clinched or advanced a representative in three of four singles championships and two of three doubles titles.
Senior Jennifer Watkins, sophomore Melissa Day and freshmen Ashley Constantine and Lindsay Bolar remained unbeaten in Saturday's singles play.
In flight A singles, Day defeated Dayton's Erin Kirkland (7-6 (5), 6-3) and American's Kristina Georgieva (7-5, 6-4) to advance to the championship match. Due to the fact that American's team will not be present for Sunday's play, Day won the flight A singles title by default over American's Katarina Kollarova.
In flight B action, Watkins defeated Leigh Ann Reilly of Villanova (6-4, 6-2) to advance to the semifinals and upset Dayton's Michelle Carroll (6-1, 6-1) to move on to Sunday's final. Constantine also advanced to form an all-Mountaineer final by upsetting Pitt's Annie Davies (5-7, 6-4, 10-2) and Rheanna Gaskin of Bucknell (6-2, 6-1).
Bolar defeated Villanova's Lindsey Puchyr (6-3, 6-4) and Tessa Hollyn Taub of American (6-2, 3-6, 10-7) to advance to the flight D singles championship tomorrow against Army's Amber McGolerick.
Sophomore Raynie Theis defeated American's Julia Colarusso (6-4, 6-2), Jessie Rybacki of Villanova (8-5) and Villanova's Kelly McAndrew (9-8, 7-2) for the flight B consolation singles bracket championship.
In doubles action, one team advanced to their championship match while two more clinched their respective bracket titles.
The duo of Day and Theis defeated Maryland-Baltimore County (8-6) to advance to Sunday's flight A doubles championship. Meanwhile, Catherine Koontz and Constantine advanced to the flight B doubles championship with a victory over Villanova (8-4) in the semifinals and won the title with a win over Bucknell (8-2).
In the flight C double consolation bracket, freshmen Sydney Thornhill and Rebekah Epstein defeated American by default in the semis and upset Villanova (8-6) for the bracket championship.
"I thought the girls played great again today," head coach Dan Silverstein said. "The fact that we have representatives in almost every flight championship really says something about the depth of this group. We have clinched quite a few championships and I expect that we will play well again tomorrow and win the rest of our title matches"
The remaining championship matches will begin at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and run to approximately 10:00 a.m. at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
