HARRISONBURG, Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team (2-1-0) defeated the University of New Hampshire (1-2-) 4-0 Friday evening in the first match of the James Madison/Comfort Inn Invitational at the JMU Soccer Field.
Sophomore midfielder Kambria Riggins scored her first goal of the season, what would become the game-winner, at the 1:18 mark to open the scoring for the Mountaineers.
Seven minutes later senior All-American Chrissie Abbott moved to within four goals of becoming WVU's all-time goals scored leader when she took a pass from freshman midfielder Nicole Cauzillo and shot it past UNH keeper Liz McKay for her second goal of the season.
Junior Leslie Barden scored in the 30th minute to make the score 3-0 West Virginia at the half.
Riggins found the goal once more at the 62:49 mark to complete the match scoring.
The win is West Virginia's first shutout of the season and the first of freshman goalkeeper Lana Bannerman's career.
"This was a great shutout for us," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. "Lana Bannerman played an excellent game in goal for us and collectively we played together and finshed our chances."
