The West Virginia University women's tennis team will open the 2003 fall season when they host the annual Martha Thorn Invitational September 5-7, at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex.
The three day tournament will feature teams from Army, American, Bucknell, Loyola, James Madison, Pitt, Maryland-Baltimore County, Morgan State, George Mason, Dayton, West Liberty, and Villanova. The teams will play all day Friday and Saturday and conclude the invitational on Sunday morning.
The Mountaineers will look to their five returning veterans to lead the way in this weekend's invitational. Leading the way for West Virginia will be senior's Courtney Howell and Jennifer Watkins along with sophomore's Melissa Day, Catherine Koontz and Raynie Theis.
"I expect a lot of wins from those five," head coach Dan Silverstein said. "I expect great things from those ladies."
Formerly known as the WVU Fall Classic, the tournament was renamed the Martha Thorn Invitational after long-time women's tennis coach Martha Thorn retired prior to the 2001 season. Thorn led the WVU women's tennis program for its first 27 years of existence and was only the fourth Mountaineer coach to accumulate over 300 wins in any sport.
