MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team knocked off the Ontario Blue Jays, 21-1, on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Hawley Field.
“This was a good chance for us to play against an outside team,” said head coach Greg Van Zant. “This is the third year a team from Ontario has come down to play us. It was a great chance for our coaches to get another look at our players.”
Junior catcher Travis D’Amico and freshman outfielder Tim Edmeads each hit home runs for the Mountaineers. The WVU offense collected 23 hits on the day.
Junior pitcher Zac Cline worked four innings to earn the win.
“I’m happy with the effort today. We have a chance to be a good ballclub with some hard work. Today was a good first step,” added Van Zant.
The Blue Jays, a traveling fall team, played the University of Nebraska yesterday and are scheduled for a game with Duquesne University tomorrow.
WVU will continue fall workouts leading up their annual Blue-Gold World Series, Oct. 12-14 at Hawley Field.
