PROVIDENCE - WVU volleyball coach Veronica Hammersmith notched her 500th career victory with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-21, 30-26) win over Providence, Sunday afternoon, at the Mullaney Gymnasium.
Hammersmith becomes just the second coach in WVU history with 500 wins, joining legendary baseball coach Dale Ramsburg who amassed 540 wins from 1968-1994. She is already the winningest women's coach at West Virginia.
"It was nice just to get a win, period, but winning No. 500 is still something special," said Hammersmith.
Dimitra Havriluk and Stephanie Zolna paced the Mountaineers with nine kills apiece while Julie Hockenson had eight kills and hit a team-high .417 for WVU.
WVU also dropped a 3-2 contest to Boston College on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Power Gym in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Zolna had a team-high 14 kills for WVU while Havriluk notched 11 kills and 12 digs for the double-double.
Sunday's win boosts West Virginia's record to 3-11.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, October 4, when they travel to Washington, D.C. to face BIG EAST foe Georgetown, at 2 p.m.
