The West Virginia University women's tennis team advanced four singles and three doubles teams by winning six matches during Saturday's play of the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md.
In flight B singles, senior Courtney Howell opened up the day by falling in a close match to Chloo Chavardes of Maryland (7-5, 7-6(4)). Jennifer Watkins, on the other hand, won by default over Syracuse's Carolina Huignard after she withdrew from competition.
Flight C was again the bright spot for the Mountaineers in the singles category. Sophomore Raynie Theis defeated Kendyl Serino of Syracuse (6-0, 6-1) and freshman Ashley Lynn Constantine knocked off Wei Ming Leon, also of Syracuse, in a grueling three set match ending in a (7-6(8), 2-6, 6-1) Mountaineer victory. Freshman Kelly Walsh suffered a (6-1, 6-4) loss to Melanie Tu of Cornell.
In flight A doubles, the duo of Melissa Day and Raynie Theis began the day by falling to Richmond's Wolfgram/Grasu (8-6). However, the two bounced back by defeating Kokubo/Edinson of Cornell (8-6) to advance to one of tomorrow's consolation matches.
In flight B doubles, West Virginia's Howell/Watkins lost to Richmond's Klein/Carter (8-4) before finishing the day with a victory over Tu/Wang of Cornell (8-3). Catherine Koontz and Ashley Lynn Constantine, also in flight B doubles, defeated Retlev/Hollyn Taub of American (8-4).
"Our girls have played extremely hard against some top notch competition the last two days," coach Dan Silverstein said. "We have a young team, and this tournament has given them some valuable experience in some tough conditions. We're looking to close out the tournament on a good note tomorrow by winning the rest of our remaining matches."
A total of seven WVU teams, four singles and three doubles, will compete in tomorrow's consolation matches beginning at 9 a.m.
