MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women's soccer senior Chrissie Abbott is one of 30 candidates on the watch list for the 2003 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy.
The Missouri Athletic Club announced its top candidates for soccer's version of the Heisman Trophy earlier today. The Hermann Trophy represents the highest level of achievement in soccer. Past recipients include some of the biggest names in soccer, such as Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Shannon MacMillian and Cindy Parlow.
Abbott, a forward from North Olmstead, Ohio, led the Mountaineers with 20 goals and seven assists for 47 points in 2002. She is a SoccerBuzz preseason All-American as well as the BIG EAST conference preseason offensive player of the year. Abbott scored the game-winner in West Virginia's 2-1 victory over Michigan State on Monday, Sept. 1, to give WVU its first win of the season.
A nominating committee consisting of conference representatives from each Division I conference for men and women will select a final ballot of the top 15 male and female candidates in early November. The winners of the award are selected through voting by Division I collegiate coaches who are members of the NSCAA. The winners will be announced at a news conference in conjunction with the NCAA Men's College Cup in Columbus, Ohio, in December.
