Volleyball: West Virginia Drops Three

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The WVU volleyball squad lost all three of its matches this weekend at the Bowling Green State Invitational at the Anderson Arena.
The Mountaineers dropped two matches on Friday, Sept. 12, to Bowling Green and Iowa State, both by scores of 3-0.
Top performances versus the tourney host Faclons included nine kills by Stephanie Zolna and an 11-dig, 26 assist effort by junior setter Brandice Studnicka. Freshman Aurora Ebert-Santos added eight kills and nine digs for WVU while Kelly Mullins notched 11 digs.
Against Iowa State, West Virginia received a solid match from Ebert-Santos, who racked up 13 kills and seven digs. Zolna and fellow sophomore Julie Hockenson amassed 10 kills apiece to lead their squad.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, Murray State won its final two games after trailing 2-1 to slide past West Virginia, 3-2.
The Mountaineers received an outstanding effort from Hockenson as she notched a season-high 20 kills with a .424 hitting percentage and five blocks. Zolna also had 20 kills to complement nine digs for WVU.
Alison Zemanski tallied 17 kills and four digs while Mullins had 13 kills to go along with a team-leading 11 digs on the match for West Virginia.
The Mountaineers (1-8) have lost eight straight matches since opening the season with a victory over Big Sky conference champion Sacramento State on Aug. 29.
Coach Veronica Hammersmith remains just two victories away from reaching the 500-mark for her career.
West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Sept. 19, when they kick off the WVU Invitational Tournament with a 7:30 p.m., match against Duquesne at the WVU Coliseum. Other teams participating this weekend at the tourney include Morehead State and Marshall.
