September 13, 2003Game captains for West Virginia were Grant Wiley, Ben Timmons and Scott Beresford. Coach Rich Rodriguez selects game captains each week. Team captains will be elected at the end of the season.
There were no first-time starters for West Virginia against Cincinnati. The Mountaineers have a total of 30 players with at least one game of starting experience. Tops on that list are Grant Wiley (34), Lance Frazier (27) and Brian King (25).
Adam Jones' fumble on WVU's first punt return of the game was the Mountaineers' first turnover this season.
Leandre Washington's fumble recovery in the first quarter was the first recovery of his career.
Rasheed Marshall's 21-yard run in the second quarter was his longest run of the season.
Marshall's pass that was intercepted by Cincinnati in the second quarter was his first interception of the season and 10th of his career. Marshall threw his 11th career interception in the fourth quarter.
Grant Wiley's fumble recovery in the second quarter was his first of the season and second of his career.
Chris Henry's 11-yard touchdown reception from Rasheed Marshall was Henry's third touchdown of the season. So far this season, he has three catches which all resulted in scores: 37-yard touchdown at ECU, 32-yard touchdown at ECU and 11-yard touchdown against Cincinnati.
Lance Frazier's fumble recovery in the third quarter was his first fumble recovery of the year and third of his career.
Cincinnati's five fumbles lost in the game are a new Mountaineer Field record. The previous mark was four set by Richmond in 1982 and Rutgers in 2001.
West Virginia and Cincinnati combined for eight fumbles lost, which is also a new Mountaineer Field Record. That mark breaks the WVU vs. Miami (Ohio) game in 1992 of seven fumbles lost.
Rasheed Marshall's 48-yard touchdown pass to Travis Garvin was Garvin's first touchdown of his Mountaineer career.
Ernest Hunter's sack in the third quarter was the first of his career. It was the second sack of the season for West Virginia. Ben Lynch had a sack last week at East Carolina.
Cincinnati's five fumbles lost ties the all-time record for fumbles lost by an opponent. It ties Richmond (1967); Boston College (1971); William & Mary (1972); and Pitt (1979).
Cincinnati's seven fumbles today ties a Mountaineer Field record by an opponent. That mark ties Tulsa from the 1998 game.
West Virginia and Cincinnati's 10 combined turnovers ties a Mountaineer Field record. The previous mark, ironically, was set by WVU and Cincinnati in 1990.
West Virginia and Cincinnati set a Mountaineer Field record with 14 combined fumbles passing the previous mark of 12 set vs. Syracuse in 1990.
Kevin McLee's fourth quarter sack was the first of his career.
Adam Lehnortt's fourth quarter sack was the second of his career.
Lance Frazier's 27-yard punt return in the fourth quarter was the longest of his career.
