MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The 2004 West Virginia University baseball team will officially begin its fall practice season on Saturday afternoon. WVU is coming off a 36-19 record that included 18 wins in BIG EAST play.
“We are excited to get fall practice underway,” says head coach Greg Van Zant. “Our main objective during fall practice is to evaluate our guys and pick the correct team.
“Sometimes the weather delays our start in the spring. The fall is critical in our development as a team. We use this time to teach our players how we would like to do things.”
Several WVU players used competitive summer leagues to improve their skills. Once school started on August 18, the baseball team went back to work.
“Our players have been working hard in the weight room,” states Van Zant. “They are a hungry group of guys who have been working on their own at the field.”
Mountaineer players see fall practice as a productive time to improve and begin to fit the pieces of the team together through daily training sessions and intrasquad scrimmages.
“The team is very excited to get back and play,” says senior first baseman Kurtis Clinton. “There are a lot of new guys on the team and we can use this time to learn more about each other. It’s important that we try to get everybody on the same page as soon as possible.”
WVU will continue fall workouts for four weeks leading up their annual Blue-Gold World Series, Oct. 12-14 at Hawley Field.
