No. 8 West Virginia opened the match scoring early when junior defender Lisa Zanti sent a blistering shot past Spartan keeper Stacy Heller in the ninth minute.
Inclement weather then rolled through Morgantown and lightning forced a 45 minute delay.
When played resumed, Mountaineer senior Chrissie Abbott scored her first goal of the season off assists from Lisa Zanti and Laura Kane to make the score 2-0 with 10 minutes left in the half.
The Mountaineers had numerous scoring chances in the second half, but were unable to capitalize on any of them. The Spartans, however, made it a one-goal match when Trisha Kenny scored on an assist by Nina Mastracci in the 56th minute.
"We beat a great opponent today," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. "We battled through the weather and the long delay and came out with the victory."
The win extends the Mountaineers regular season home win streak to 12 games.
West Virginia returns action on Friday, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m., when they battle New Hampshire in the first round of the James Madison/Comfort Inn Invitational in Harrionsburg, Va. The Mountaineers will then play JMU on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 2:30 p.m., to complete the tournament.
