MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia men's soccer team fell in double overtime to Richmond 2-1 in their second game of the Nike/Alltell Classic at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va.
The Mountaineers (0-2-0) and Spiders (1-1-0) played to a scoreless tie through much of Sunday afternoon's contest. WVU could only muster two shots in the first half while Richmond booted nine.
In the 76th minute Mountaineer sophomore Devon McTavish fired a shot past Richmond goalkeeper Mike Nwaneri. McTavish took advantage of a free kick awarded after a foul to earn his first goal of the season.
WVU seemed to have their first win of the 2003 campaign locked up until the Spiders were awarded a free shot with only nine seconds remaining in the match. Richmond junior Paul Kelly struck the free kick into the back of the net sending the match into overtime.
Neither team was able to put the other away after the first golden goal overtime, sending the match into double OT. Finally, after 105 minutes of play senior Vinnie Ciarpella gathered a loose ball in the box and drove it past WVU goalkeeper Adam Shutler.
The Mountaineers were out-shot 20-9 in the contest and forced Nwaneri to make only three saves. Shutler stopped seven shots for WVU.
The Mountaineers next travel to Philadelphia to face conference foe Villanova on Friday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
