MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - In the latest round of women's soccer preseason polls, the West Virginia University women's soccer team has been ranked 11th by Soccer America, a leading national soccer publication.
WVU is one of four BIG EAST teams cracking the Top 25 this week. Other conference members ranked include Notre Dame (No.6), Connecticut (No.15) and Villanova (No.22). The Mountaineers will face Notre Dame in South Bend on Friday, Oct. 3, and Villanova on Sunday, Oct. 19, in mid-Atlantic division action. West Virginia travels to Storrs, Conn., to face UConn on Friday, Sept. 19, for a cross-divisional match.
In addition to the three conference foes, three of West Virginia's non-conference opponents are also on the list. Regional squads Penn State (No.8) and Virginia (No.9) as well as first-time opponent Tennessee (No.12) received Top 25 nods as well.
In previously released polls, the Mountaineers were ranked eighth by SoccerBuzz and 18th by the NSCAA.
West Virginia opens its 2003 season on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m., when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for a match against Virginia.
