MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia baseball player Grant Psomas has recently been named the Tony Lucadello Top Position Player Prospect Award from the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League.
Psomas, a native of Carnegie, Pa., collected 42 hits and 20 RBIs while being named first team All-GLSCL for the Pittsburgh Pandas. The WVU shortstop batted .375, fourth in the league in batting average, while earning a selection in July’s All-Star game.
The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League had over 45 former players taken in the 2003 Major League Baseball draft, including eight first rounders in the past three seasons.
Several Mountaineer players used competitive summer leagues to improve their skills. Psomas’ teammate at West Virginia, Stan Posluszny, also played for the Pittsburgh Pandas. Posluszny batted .340 a year ago while being named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.
Last year, Psomas started in 54 of the 55 games for WVU while batting .289. The Mountaineers won 35 regular season games, including 18 in BIG EAST play.
